Layered Tech announced today that Microsoft Windows Server 2008 is now available for rapid server deployments via Astro, our proprietary automated Web hosting platform. With this addition, we offer a full range of operating systems, including high-performance and secure Linux and Unix systems, with servers that can be provisioned almost instantaneously.
The office of Vivek Kundra, President Obama’s new federal CIO, has requested Layered Tech to participate in a summit on cloud computing. Along with a handful of other high-tech firms, Layered Tech will be in a roundtable discussion on the federal government’s potential adoption of cloud computing technologies. The meeting is slated for May 6.
Layered Tech recently announced that its virtualization investments and acquisition of FastServers.net have helped drive DEFCON managed services across its broad range of products, including virtual machines. This latest advance from Layered Tech now enables customers of its Grid Layer® virtual machines (VM) to experience the same highly developed services available to its dedicated server clients.
DEFCON Tiered Managed Services NOW on Layered Tech’s Virtual Machines
DEFCON managed services mitigate challenges commonly associated with the operations of hosted infrastructure, providing a single source for server administration, service-level based support, 24×7 monitoring and recovery, patch management, and security protection. In addition to The Grid Layer VM offering, DEFCON managed services are available with Layered Tech’s on-demand, dedicated server solutions based on CentOS, Red Hat, and Windows 2003.
Tiered DEFCON managed services provide customers the freedom to choose the level of service they want to manage their servers. From DEFCON 5 (for those customers who want to manage all aspects of their server applications) to DEFCON 1 (in which Layered Tech provides the full scope of server management and monitoring), companies can customize their server operations, easily and quickly scaling up or down as their organizations grow and as needs change.
Virtualization Can Significantly Reduce Costs
The benefits of transitioning to a hosted virtual machine environment are amplified for companies that traditionally buy multiple physical servers, because virtualization can significantly reduce costs associated with hardware, data centers and other network infrastructure. In addition to saving hard costs, customers also can reduce demands on internal IT personnel who no longer have to manage multiple physical servers and data centers.
“For years, Layered Tech has created flexible solutions that remove server costs and complexity so that customers can focus on their core business and leave server management to us. The extension of DEFCON managed services to our Grid Layer virtual machines is another powerful value-creating tool for our customers,” said Layered Tech Chief Marketing Officer John Pozadzides. “Our roots are as a hosting provider that works closely with customers, and we’re continuing to do that in the area of virtualization by giving our customers even greater choice when it comes to defining the amount of security, support, monitoring, and specialized software that is associated with their virtualization environment.”
DEFCON management services are available initially to existing Layered Tech customers – those who already are Grid Layer VM customers and those who wish to migrate from a dedicated server environment to a virtualization platform. The managed virtual machine offering includes an operating system such as CentOS and a control panel such as cPanel or Plesk; customers will have the option to buy management services for those control panels.
( PLANO, TX – July 30, 2008 ) – Layered Tech, Inc., a leading worldwide provider of on-demand IT infrastructure, announces the availability of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V-based virtual private machines. The announcement marks one of the first offerings of a hypervisor-based virtual private machine, allowing customers to take advantage of the control, efficiency and overall cost-effectiveness of server consolidation and virtualization. The release follows on the heels of Layered Tech’s recent launch of dedicated servers running Microsoft Windows 2008 and Hyper-V. Layered Tech made the announcement at HostingCon 2008, the premier conference and tradeshow for the hosted services industry.
“The Microsoft Hyper-V platform allows Layered Tech to deliver a category-leading product that outperforms traditional VPS offerings generally available in the marketplace,” said Jack Finlayson, Chief Executive Officer, Layered Tech. “These are full virtual machines with complete control over everything, right down to the operating system. Customers now have a greater range of control than ever before, combined with a much higher degree of security and reliability.”
As a key feature of Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V allows virtualization of multiple operating systems, including Windows and Linux, all on the same server. The technology provides a scalable, reliable and highly available virtualization platform along with a single set of integrated management tools to manage both physical and virtual resources. Windows Hyper-V also offers large memory support and provides backup/restore, snapshotting and easy transition of virtual servers from one physical server to another.
The Hyper-V-based virtual private machines are delegated virtual instances from top-of-the-line servers, which are either IntelVT (IVT) or AMD-V-enabled processors for true virtualization. Windows Hyper-V allows both 32-bit and 64-bit Linux or Windows virtual machines to be created independent of the underlying operating system. Standalone applications such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SharePoint, for example, will now be able to run on one physical server, allowing users to consolidate multiple systems into a single environment without compromising control, security features or performance.
“We are excited that Layered Tech is among the first hosting providers to bring dedicated Hyper-V-based virtual private servers to market,” said John Zanni, General Manager of Worldwide Hosting, Microsoft Corp. “Their offering, combined with the tremendous advantages of a hypervisor-based virtualization tool, will help extend the savings realized through server consolidation and deliver on the vision of true virtualization. In addition, Hyper-V will enable Layered Tech to continue to run a heterogeneous environment by running both Windows and Linux on the same server using a single management interface.”
Pricing for Hyper-V-based virtual private machines starts at $89.00 per month, and additional virtual machines are available on a pay-as-you-grow basis to support customers’ specific needs.
